How to fix the PS3 Red light of death at home

WHAT IS THE PS3 RED LIGHT OF DEATH? - Flashing red light

So when your playing your awesome PS3 and all is well but then the game just stops and the PS3 cuts out, Your slightly annoyed depending on the last time you saved your progress. When you come to turn the PS3 back on and it just cuts out leaving you with just a flashing red light, That's when you really get annoyed and then the panic sets in as you know there is a major problem. There are a few solutions to the Red light error but I will discuss them later down this article.

THE CAUSES OF THE PS3 RED LIGHT OF DEATH?

By this time your Thinking WTF!!! what the hell is wrong with my PS3?, well what actually happens is, When you play your PS3 there is a lot of heat build up internally, especially on and around the motherboard. Now if you have read my article on the YLOD / red light of death you will know what the GPU & CPU Chips are, Don't worry if you haven't because I will tell you now. The GPU (Graphics chip) and the CPU ( Brain) are internal chips that are connected to the motherboard by solder. Unfortunately SONY did not splash out on the expensive stuff so when this solder heats up and then cools down after playing, over time this will crack the solder and eventually the chips will lose connection to the motherboard

AND THEN......

Well this is the only difference between the YLOD  - Yellow Light of death and the RLOD - Red light of death, When both chips lose connection you will end up with a brief flashing yellow light followed by the red flashing light and the PS3 will not power up. Now when only one chip loses connection you end up with just a red flashing light, this light system was developed by SONY so they could see what the problem was without having to open your PS3 so they could direct the PS3 through the correct repair process.

*** THE SOLUTIONS ***

THE FIX OPTION 1

If your still in warranty then you can send the console off to SONY who can repair most problems with the PS3 like the Red light of death. This would be for free you just need to provide the packaging so they can collect the console from you, the whole process will take around 4-6 weeks. If your not in warranty Then you will can still send your console to Sony but the difference this time will be that they get to charge you a massive $150 for the privilege.

THE FIX OPTION 2

This problem with the PS3 can be fixed at home quite easily but you will need to pick up a good PS3 repair guide to go through the problem step by step and fix the problem yourself. You simply download the guide follow the instructions and your done within the hour or two depending on how fast you wish to take the repair, this is a far less cost and the turn over time for the repair is slashed to hours not weeks.
